Responsibility for the unrestricted movement of antiques and artworks across the border of Russia
05-10-2015

Often, people can meet this very serious article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of Russia without intent, while the responsibility for smuggling cultural property in our country is very severe – the maximum penalty can be imprisonment for a term of seven to twelve years with a fine of up to one million rubles or in the amount of the wage or other income of the convicted person for a period of up to five years or without it and with the restriction of freedom for a term of up to two years or without it.

The most common mistake of a person moving cultural valuables or antiques in hand luggage or in private car is intentional or unintentional non-declaration – in other words, a person simply passes through a green corridor.

As a rule, this happens for the reason that people believe, that this article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of Russia of concerns only the export of items from Russia, but this is not so – the non-declaring of art and antiques during importation into Russia is also considered illegal crossing the border.

In the case of cargo shipments of cultural values, the risks are much higher.

We recommend that you entrust the process to professionals and thereby save your nerves, time and money, which in case of mistake will be spent muc more than it has been planned to save.
